rug hooking

I want to publish another blog before I leave for Maine.  This summer I started to do some rug hooking.  I have always wanted to try it-for years and I never got around to it or I made up an excuse about how I couldn't even finish my knitting projects.  But this summer Elaine Eskesen, the owner of Pine Tree Yarns in Damarisctta has gotten into rug hooking in a big way.  I just love Elaine.  Every summer I couldn't wait to go to Pine Tree Yarns to see what she dyed.  Before rug hooking she was best known for yarn dyeing.  She wrote a beautiful book about it and I have spent a lot of time in her store looking and buying her yarns.  She has a great eye for color and is very creative. She is also a very nice person -fun to talk to. Well this summer I bought a beginners rug hooking kit from her and have been slowly working on it.  it is a lot of fun.I can't believe I have been back from Maine for a month and I haven' gotten around to telling you about our trip to Peaks Island and then my visit to Knitwits in Portland.  i went to Blue Hill and met the women of String Theory and bought their yarn.  Which I love!!!!!! This weekend I want to hit the Common Ground Fair .  The fair is such fun .  They have a lot of fiber and crafts in addition to great food an lots of interesting natural products.

Hopefully to dayI will get to some of the knitting I did this summer.  Today is my wedding anniversary. We have been married for 28 years it seems impossible.But my son is 26 which I can't believe either.  He was just here for a visit.  It was nice having him home.  My youngest son started college a couple of weeks ago and I have been very busy getting him adjusted.  He has autism so it is hard work on his part even though he is only taking 2 classes .  We are also working on his driving.  But lets get started with a couple of books I read recently.  I am no longer going to mention every book I have been reading just some of the highlights .  I find writing about all of them too time consuming.  I recently finished " The Light Between Two Oceans" by M.L> Stedman.  She is a Australian writer and the book takes place in Australia.  A husband and wife work at a remote lighthouse off the coast of Australia.  The wife has had several miscarriages and a stillborn when one day a boat with a dead man in it and a baby washes up on shore.  They assume the mother has died at sea so they keep the baby. When they finally go into the mainland about 18months later they find there action has had terrible consequences.  This is a good story and is a bestseller.  Another funny book I read was"Calling Invisible Women" by Jeanne Ray.  A women in her 50's because of a combination of drugs she is taking -bone density,hormones and vitamins.  It takes several weeks for her family to even notice.  Just writing this is making me smile.  She then finds similar women this has happened to and they confront the drug company.  It is funny at times too weird and the beginning is the best. An oldie but goodie I found at our library in Maine during their annual book sale was"A Big Storm Knocked I Over " by Laurie Colwin.  All books available on Amazon.com                     

Now knitting  The top sweater is from the book Knitbot by Hannah Fettig.  It is called "Breezy"which is very similar to her "Effortless' cardigan but made with a lighter weight yarn.  The yarn is "finch"a fingering weight yarn in the kittywake color .  The yarn looks gray with blue undertones.  I am knitting it on size 5 needles.  The yarn is 100% wool and i just love it.  I just have to pick up the bands around the outside and I will be finished.  I got the yarn at Purl Diva in Brunswick Maine.  They were having a trunk show at the store and I got to try a finished version of the sweater.  I did not think the style would look good on me since I am small but it did.  I just love Hannah Fettigs patterns .  They are so clearly written and most are from the top down so you get to try them on as you knit and then there is little finishing.The other sweater I am doing is the one on the cover of the book.  Again the yarn is by Quince &Company "Tern" which is a mixture of wool and silk and is so soft.  I am working on the sleeves. Hopefully I will finish them this week.  I am planning another trip to Maine at the end of September and of course I want to buy more yarn.  More Maine adventures in the next post.
