the end of the bulbs- they were great this year

January continues

Just wanted to do a blog since I hadn't done one in about 3 weeks.  I had the flu that really knocked me out.  I haven't even had a cold for about 10 years so I thought I was pretty immune from everything.I had a fever for a few days and hours when I just stared into space and did nothing.  Feeling much better. I haven't done much reading or knitting.  I did read "Flight Behavior " by Barbara Kingsolver.  I really liked it.  It is about a poor rural woman in Kentucky who comes upon acres of monarch butterflies that have suddenly appeared on their poor farm and the consequences to her, her family, the farm and her town. Sometimes she gets a little too preachy on global warming and it kinda bogs down.  There is a little knitting in it. The farm has sheep that they shear and make wool.  Also a group of knitters come to see the butterflies, set up tents there and knit butterflies using recycled orange and black yarn.  It makes me think Barbara Kingsolver is a knitter. Available on amazon.
I have almost finished the gloves I was working on and am 90% finished with the Color Affection shawl. available on raverly I am not sure I made the right color choice.  I love the yarn and the colors looked great when I held them together but now I am not sure.  The yarn as I have said before is from String Theory in Blue Hill Maine. Stringtheoryyarn.com I have all kind of projects dancing in my head so next time I hope to have a lot of new projects on my needles.  We are having a cold rainy weekend-perfect for knitting and reading.Peace

January New Projects

I just read my last blog entry and I really jumped around .  Some of it doesn't make sense.  I will try to do better and proof read before I publish.  I am in such a hurry to get the blog done it is often sloppy. Downton Abbey starts it third season tonight.  Can't wait.  My husband  and I started watching breaking bad on DVD.  It is depressing.  If I didn't know it kept going for many more seasons and my daughter telling me it gets better I would stop watching it. I watched "Salomon Fishing in Yemen "last night.  This was better than I thought it would be.  IF you want a nice light movie that is one I would recommend.  A excellent show on BBC America is "The Hour" . Set in England in the 1950's it is about a group of people doing a show like" 60 minutes". The second season ended this week and it was better than the first season.
I read a couple of books this week. "Sheepish" by Catherine Friend.  If you are not into knitting or fiber crafts I would not recommend this book.  Two women buy a farm in Minnesota and raise sheep. The author becomes a fiber fanatic by the end of the book.  She writes in a amusing style.  It is a quick read and I finished it in about a day. Right now I am reading a book "Denting the Bosch" by Teresa Link on my kindle.  This is about 3 middle aged couples who are friends who find themselves unmoored in the prime of their lives.  It is about marriage, modern life, friendship.  Not bad.  Started out very good but as is typical has gone downhill.

Now my knitting-
Started second glove.  Pattern is a free raverly download called" Harry's basic glove pattern". The yarn is Blue Sky Alpaca Silk.  At this point I just want to finish the gloves.  I don't think I will ever make another pair.  Mittens are much more fun.

I finished the Eva Sweater.  I love it.  I could have gone down to the smallest size.I made the sleeves long instead of the little cap sleeves in the pattern and I added one row of the contrast color.  It is a Quince and co. pattern using Quince Yarn Lark the colors Kumliens Gull and contrast color Apricot.  I used 7 skeins of the Kumliens and 1 skein of the apricot.  This is a worsted weight yarn done on 8 needles.

Last but not least I started Color Affection a paid pattern on raverly by Vera Valimacky. A lot of people are making this now.  I have seen a few of these in person and the are beautiful.  They are easy garter stitch and great to take traveling, when talking to people, another word mindless knitting.  I find it relaxing almost like meditation.  This shawl is one in String Theory yarn another small knitting company in Blue Hill Maine.  It is in Caper sock yarn which is 80%wool,10% nylon,10% cashmere.  This is beautiful hand dyed sock yarn.  In the  picture one color looks brown but is really a beautiful shade called Black Tulip.  The other colors are cactus and light teal.  I really enjoy knitting it.

We are having some cold sweater wearing weather here.Starting January 14 vacation will be over.  It has been a great break and over too soon.  I miss everyone.  Have a great week. PEACE
