summer reading

I read about 20 books this summer so in today's post I will talk about a few more." The Innocents"by Francesca Segal.  A take off on "The Age of Innocence" by Edith Wharton,it is about a Jewish family in central London in the present day. They too live in a insular affluent world.  I liked this book.  You may have seen the move made out of the Edith Wharton book starring Daniel Day Lewis and Michelle Pfieffer so you kinda know the plot line.
"The Meryl Strep Movie Club" by Mia March True romance or chick-lit a beach read I read it in a day and a half.  The author is from Maine and I met in our local bookstore. It involves 2 sisters,a cousin, and aunt running a inn in Maine.  They are all dealing with different problems. Every  Friday night they watch a Meryl Strep Movie and discuss it along with their problems.  It was a light summer read and it did make me want to watch some of her movies again.
"Tigers in Red Weather"by Liza Klaussmann I really liked this book.Very different.  It takes place between 1945-1969 mostly on Nantucket where 2 sisters have a summer home. They marry and each has a child. One child is truly disturbed.  They all have hidden lives and secrets.  Each chapter is told from different characters and points of view.
"Where'd You Go Bernadette; A Novel" by Maria Semple This was a really different book.  It is funny.  Parts made me laugh out loud.  A family moves from L.A. to Seattle and the wife hates it.The daughter is in middle school and the husband works for Microsoft .  The story is told by the characters but also through e-mail, notes from the school, diary entrees etc. A talk with the author recently appeared in the New York Times.
I've had it with book reviews and want to get onto knitting, yarn and Maine.

back from maine

front of house

I have recently returned from Maine.  We had great summer.  The weather was good with just a couple of rainy days.  I got to visit with my parents and my sisters.I traveled by train to Boston and Connecticut which is so different from Arizona.  We also got to see the other Breisblatts.  My daughter Faith came up for a couple of weeks so I had my shopping companion.  I got to a lot yarn stores including String Theory in Blue Hill. I got some knitting done but not as much as I thought I would knitting several hours a day.I read a lot of books .  I will talk about several today.  The knitting will have to wait because I need to take pictures of what I did. My son starts school on Tuesday.  He will be starting community college and I think I am more nervous than he is. He has autism so this is a big step for him.  We went over to the school the other day and walked through his schedule. I started a new craft up in Maine -Rug Hooking like I needed something else. Again, I will write about that on a another day.First some pictures of Maine.

Books
"Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn This book is a best seller and I can see why.  A man's wife is murdered or was she?  Of course the husband is the main suspect.  The wife's side is explained in her diaries.  There are many twists to this mystery.  It is a great summer read .  You won't be able to put it down.It appeals to men and women.  My husband read it too and liked it."The World Without You " by Josh Henkin.  I really liked this book,my husband did too.  Jewish family is coming together at their summer house in the Berkshires for a memorial for their son who was a journalist killed in the middle east.  the family includes mother, father, 3 sisters and their husbands and children.  It is told from different points of view how they dealt  with this tragedy and what is happening in their lives.  It is good read.last for today is"When We were the Kennedys" by Monica Wood I loved this book.  This a true story written by a Maine author about the death of her father. It is a great story about families, sisters, and community and a dying way of life.  It is about small towns and leaving home. I shed a tear or two at the end I would have been sobbing if I wasn't on a packed plane. It was sad but also uplifting at the same time.  All books are available at Amazon.com. .
